I don’t know how robust the science is, but if this is a risk to new human diseases from development, then such a risk needs to be taken seriously. After Covid 19 is dealt with, we will still have the challenge of emission reduction. This article poses the question as to whether in developing that strategy, we need to think more holistically about the effects of development on the environment and its consequences.

Another conclusion might be that the effects of our connected, globalised world need to be reviewed. The costs of connectivity in terms of covid 19 and our environmental footprint are proving enormous. So is our globalised economic model and all that goes with it, sustainable? While many of us are locked down, we have the time to think about this.
